What makes a good learning intention (and what wrecks one)

The learning intention on the board is often the weakest part of the lesson

Walk into most classrooms and you will find a learning intention written up somewhere. Often on a slide. Sometimes copied from the syllabus word for word. It sits there for the whole lesson and does almost no work.

That is a waste. A good learning intention shapes what you teach, what you check, and what students can tell you at the end. A bad one just fills a box on a template. The difference is not about wording tricks. It is about clarity of thinking before the lesson starts.

What a learning intention is actually for

Two things. First, it tells you what students should be able to do by the end. That keeps your teaching focused. If a task does not serve the intention, you can cut it. Second, it gives students a target they can measure themselves against. "Did I get there or not?" A learning intention they cannot self-assess against is not doing its job.

Everything else is decoration. Colour-coded WALT and WILF headers are fine if your school uses them, but they are not the point. The point is a single, clear statement of what changes in a student's head by the end of the lesson.

The three things that wreck them

Too vague. "Understand the causes of World War I." Understand how? Recall them? Explain them? Rank them by significance? A student cannot tell whether they have understood, and neither can you. Vague verbs like *understand*, *know*, *explore* and *appreciate* hide what you actually want.

Too bloated. Some intentions try to cram the whole unit into one sentence. "Students will analyse, evaluate and synthesise a range of persuasive techniques across multiple text types while considering audience and purpose." That is not a lesson. That is a term. When the intention is too big, no single lesson can hit it, and the check for understanding has nothing precise to test.

Confused with the activity. "Complete the worksheet on quadratic equations." That describes what students *do*, not what they *learn*. A student can finish the worksheet and still not be able to factorise a quadratic. The activity is the means. The learning is the end. Never swap them.

What good looks like

Good intentions use a verb you can observe, and they name the content precisely. Compare these:

  • Weak: *Understand persuasive writing.*
  • Better: *Explain how a writer uses emotive language to position a reader.*
  • Weak: *Explore photosynthesis.*
  • Better: *Describe the inputs and outputs of photosynthesis and where each part happens in the cell.*
  • Weak: *Know about the water cycle.*
  • Better: *Label the stages of the water cycle and explain what drives evaporation and condensation.*

The better versions do more than sound tidy. They tell you exactly what to demonstrate, what examples to choose, and what to ask when you check. If a student can *explain how a writer uses emotive language*, you know how to test that. You cannot test *understand persuasive writing* in the same clean way.

Match the verb to the thinking

The verb carries the load. It sets the level of thinking you are asking for, so choose it on purpose.

  • **Recall and describe** for foundational knowledge. *List the properties of ionic compounds.*
  • **Explain and apply** once the knowledge is secure. *Apply the rule for balancing equations to three new examples.*
  • **Analyse and evaluate** when students have enough to reason with. *Evaluate which of two sources is more reliable and justify your choice.*

A common mistake is reaching for *analyse* and *evaluate* too early, before students hold the knowledge those verbs depend on. You cannot evaluate two historical sources if you cannot yet describe what each one says. Higher-order verbs are not better verbs. They are later verbs.

Keep it to one lesson

If you cannot teach it and check it inside the lesson, it is too big. Break it down. A unit on essay writing might need six lessons, each with its own intention: one on thesis statements, one on topic sentences, one on integrating evidence, and so on. Each one is small enough to demonstrate, practise and check before students leave.

This is where the workload payoff sits. When the intention is tight, the rest of the lesson almost plans itself. You know the worked example to model. You know the guided practice to run. You know the exit question that proves it. A woolly intention forces you to invent all of that on the fly.

A quick test before you commit

Before you lock in a learning intention, ask three questions:

  • Can a student honestly answer "yes" or "no" to whether they met it?
  • Can I check it in one lesson, not one term?
  • Does the verb name real thinking, not just an activity?

If any answer is no, rewrite it. Two minutes of sharpening here saves you guessing later, and it saves students the confusion of chasing a target they were never shown clearly.
