Same content, same class, different results
Two Year 8 maths classes. Same school, same textbook, same topic: solving two-step equations. One class gets it in a single lesson. The other spends three lessons stuck.
The gap often is not the students. It is not the resources either. It is the exact words used to explain the thing.
This is the quiet part of explicit instruction. We talk a lot about sequencing, worked examples and checking for understanding. We talk much less about the sentences a teacher actually says out loud. But those sentences carry the whole lesson.
Precise language does the heavy lifting
Archer and Hughes are blunt about this. Clear, consistent, concise language is not a nice-to-have. It is the mechanism that makes instruction stick.
Vague explanations force students to guess. And when a student guesses wrong, they often build the wrong idea firmly. Reteaching a wrong idea is harder than teaching a new one.
Look at the difference between these two explanations of the same step:
- •**Vague:** "So you kind of move the number over and change it, and then you sort of deal with the other bit."
- •**Precise:** "To undo adding 3, we subtract 3 from both sides. We do the same thing to both sides so the equation stays balanced."
The second version names the operation, gives the reason, and uses a term the student can hold on to: balanced. The first version sounds friendly and explains almost nothing.
Where explanations go wobbly
Even strong teachers loosen their language under pressure. Here are the common leaks.
Pronouns with no home. "Put it there and then take that away." Which it? Take away from where? On a whiteboard the teacher is pointing, so it feels clear. For a student copying it down later, it is fog.
Words that drift. Using "take away", "minus", "subtract" and "difference" in the same three minutes. To an expert these are the same idea. To a novice they are four different words that might mean four different things.
Too many words. Long, hedged sentences bury the point. "Now what we're going to want to try to do here, if we can, is have a bit of a think about what the author might possibly be suggesting." The instruction is: "Find one word that shows how the author feels." Say that.
Explaining by example only. Working the problem while narrating every keystroke, but never stating the rule. Students see what you did. They do not hear why. So they can copy your example and freeze on the next one.
How to tighten your teacher talk
You do not need to script every word. You do need to plan the load-bearing sentences: the ones that carry the new idea. A few habits help.
Decide your terms before the lesson. Pick one word for each concept and use it every time. If it is "subtract", it is always "subtract". Consistency is not boring. It is kind.
Say the rule, then show it. State the general point in one clean sentence, then demonstrate it. "A comma separates items in a list. Watch." Rule first gives students something to hang the example on.
Cut the hedges. "Sort of", "kind of", "a little bit", "might possibly". These soften instructions until they mean nothing. Delete them from the sentences that matter.
Name what you are pointing at. Instead of "move this here", say "move the 3 to the right side of the equals sign". Assume the student is not looking at your finger.
Test the explanation on paper. If you wrote your explanation as a single sentence, would a student who missed the lesson understand it? If not, tighten it.
A worked contrast
Say the topic is identifying the main idea of a paragraph.
The loose version: "Have a look at the paragraph and think about what it's mostly about, the big thing the writer is getting at, and try to sum that up."
The tight version: "The main idea is the one thing the whole paragraph is about. To find it, ask: what is repeated? First I read the paragraph. Then I underline the word or idea that comes up most. That is usually the main idea."
The second version gives a definition, a question to ask, and a two-step method. A struggling reader can actually follow it. The first version only works for students who could already do it.
Why this is hard to fix alone
Here is the honest problem. You cannot easily hear your own teacher talk. In the moment you know what you mean, so it all sounds clear to you. The loose language is invisible from the inside.
