The check for understanding most lessons skip

You taught it. But did they get it?

Every teacher has had this moment. You explain a concept well. The room nods. You set the task. Then you walk around and half the class has no idea what to do.

The gap sits between teaching and learning. And the tool that closes it is the one most often rushed or skipped: the check for understanding.

This is not a nice-to-have. In the explicit instruction research (Hollingsworth & Ybarra; Archer & Hughes), checking for understanding is not a phase at the end. It runs through the whole lesson. Every few minutes you find out what students know, then decide what to do next.

Why 'any questions?' does not count

The most common check in classrooms is a false one. You ask, "Does everyone understand?" or "Any questions?" and take silence as a yes.

Silence tells you nothing. The students who are lost usually do not know enough to ask a question. The confident ones stay quiet. You get a false green light and move on.

A real check has three features:

  • **It samples the whole class, not volunteers.** One hand up is not data.
  • **It gives you an answer you can see or hear.** Not a nod. An actual response.
  • **It happens before the mistake compounds.** You catch the confusion at step two, not at the end of the unit.

What good checks look like in practice

None of these are new. Good teachers use them every day. The point is to use them deliberately, at the right moments, on the parts of the lesson that matter most.

Whiteboards. Ask a question. Every student writes an answer. On your signal, everyone shows. In three seconds you can scan thirty responses. A Year 8 maths class solving `3x + 4 = 19` shows you their working, and you see instantly who dropped the four and who divided wrong.

Cold call with think time. Pose the question first. Give everyone a few seconds to think. Then name a student. Because anyone could be called, everyone has to prepare an answer. This beats hands-up, which only samples the keen.

Choral response for facts. For things that should be automatic, like the definition of a metaphor or the formula for the area of a triangle, the whole class answers together. Weak spots are audible.

Turn and talk, then sample. Students discuss with a partner, then you cold call a few to report. You hear the thinking, not just the final answer.

The choice depends on what you are checking. Recall of a fact suits choral response. Reasoning through a problem suits whiteboards or cold call.

Then act on what you see

A check is only useful if it changes what you do next. Two outcomes matter.

If most of the class has it, move on. Do not over-teach a point they have already grasped. That wastes their time and yours.

If a chunk of the class is lost, stop and reteach. Model the step again. Do another worked example. Then check again before releasing them to independent work.

This is the discipline explicit instruction demands. You do not push through the plan because the plan says so. You respond to what the room is telling you.

The planning problem

Here is where it gets hard. Designing good checks takes time. For each key point in a lesson you have to decide what to check, how to check it, and what a right answer looks like so you can judge responses on the spot.

Do that properly for a full lesson and you are writing a small script. Do it for five lessons a day, across three subjects, and it collapses. So teachers fall back on "any questions?" Not because they do not know better. Because there is no time.

That is the trade-off good pedagogy usually loses. The right method is known. The workload makes it impractical.
